와운
북촌이 지닌 가장 큰 경험적 가치는 무엇일까. 와운 프로젝트는 이 장소가 오랜 시간 변함없이 간직해온 의미와 가치에 대한 고민에서 시작되었다. 기존 한옥은 대수선을 마친 지 10년이 채 지나지 않은 상태였기에, 지랩은 제한적인 범위 안에서 이 장소가 가진 본질적인 매력을 더욱 선명하게 드러내는 방향으로 접근하고자 했다.
와운은 가회동 중심길 서측 능선에 위치한다. 마당에서 바라보이는 북촌의 풍경은 특히 인상적이었다. 능선을 따라 촘촘히 이어진 골목 사이로 한옥들이 모여 있는 모습은 마치 기와로 만들어진 구름처럼 느껴졌다. 그리고 와운은 그 풍경 위에 조용히 내려앉은 한 채의 집처럼 다가왔다.
북촌의 골목은 계절과 시간, 그리고 수많은 방문객들로 인해 끊임없이 변한다. 하지만 와운의 담장 너머로 바라보이는 북촌의 풍경만큼은 언제나 한결같은 모습으로 잔잔한 감동을 전해준다.
와운의 내부는 스테이 특유의 비일상적인 연출보다는, 북촌의 작은 집에 가족을 초대하는 장면을 상상하며 디자인했다. 화려함보다는 포근함을, 과하게 세련된 감각보다는 집과 같은 편안함을 담고자 했다.
반면 외부의 마당은 조금 더 오래 머물고 싶고, 자연스럽게 밖으로 나가고 싶어지는 풍경을 만드는 데 집중했다. 한옥에서 흔히 사용되는 화강석을 작은 단위로 나누어 포장하고, 그 사이로 사용 영역과 식재 영역을 조율하며 기존 한옥 정원과는 또 다른 밀도와 감각을 가진 풍경을 구현하고자 했다.
어쩌면 무심히 지나칠 수 있는 일상의 한켠에서, 오랜 시간 그 자리를 지켜온 와운은 게스트들에게 잠시 일상에서 벗어나 한국과 서울, 그리고 북촌 속에 머물 수 있는 작은 안식처가 되기를 바란다.
What is the greatest experiential value of Bukchon? The Waoon project began with a reflection on the meaning and values this place has preserved unchanged over a long period of time. Since the existing hanok had undergone a major renovation less than ten years ago, Z-Lab sought to approach the project within a limited scope, focusing on revealing the essential charm of the place more clearly.
Waoon is situated along the western ridge of Gahoe-dong’s main street. The view of Bukchon from the courtyard was especially striking. The hanoks gathered tightly along the narrow alleys tracing the ridge felt almost like clouds made of roof tiles. And Waoon appeared as a quiet house gently settled upon that landscape.
The alleys of Bukchon are constantly changing through the seasons, the passing hours, and the countless visitors who move through them. Yet the scenery seen beyond Waoon’s walls remains consistently calm, offering a quiet sense of emotion and familiarity.
Rather than creating the kind of dramatic, extraordinary atmosphere often associated with stays, the interior of Waoon was designed around the image of inviting family into a small house in Bukchon. More than extravagance, we sought warmth; more than excessive sophistication, we aimed for the comfort and familiarity of home.
In contrast, the courtyard was designed as a landscape that naturally encourages people to linger longer and step outside. Granite, a material commonly used in traditional hanok architecture, was divided into smaller units for the paving, while the areas for movement and planting were carefully adjusted in between. Through this approach, we sought to create a landscape with a different sense of density and texture from that of a conventional hanok garden.
Within a quiet corner of everyday life that might otherwise be passed by unnoticed, Waoon has stood in its place for a long time. We hope it can become a small refuge where guests may briefly step away from daily life and find themselves immersed in Korea, Seoul, and Bukchon.
