MYEONGJIGAK

명지각

2020년 마주하게 된 성춘향과 이몽룡의 춘향전의 이야기로 가득한 도시 남원은 여타 지방 소도시와 같은 다양한 도시적 문제들로 가득했다. 젊은 사람들은 조금씩 도시를 빠져 나가고, 구도심의 쇠퇴와 역사 문화 자원이 조금씩 사라져가는 현실 속에 있었다. 

명지각은 남원 구도심의 중심에서 1960년대 부터 명지관, 명지장, 명지호텔이라는 이름으로 1980년대 까지 운영되다가 숙박 시설의 기능은 잃은채 한정식 집으로 사용 되어 왔다. 이를 남원시와 함께 고민한 남원 구도심 도시재생 프로그램 구상을 바탕으로 2022년 지역특화형 친환경 숙박시설 조성사업 공모를 거쳐 지금의 한옥 호텔, 명지각으로 완성되었다. 

명지각 본관은 조각된 기둥과 포치(porch), 중정을 중심으로 한 공간 배치, 깊은 처마와 회랑 등 고유한 공간적 특성을 보존하고 복원하는 데 중점을 두었다. 동시에 현대적인 기능과 규모에 부합하도록 프로그램과 평면을 재구성했다.

객실은 명지각의 정원과 회랑을 통해 진입할 수 있도록 설계해, 명지각만의 공간적 특성을 직접 경험할 수 있도록 했다. 단층 구조로 인한 프라이버시의 한계는 원래 명지각에 있던 문살 이미지를 모티브로 덧창을 디자인 하였고, 상대적으로 좁을 수 있는 객실 공간은 프라이빗한 기능만 유지하고 사랑채의 F&B 시설과 안사랑채의 라운지의 공용 공간의 기능으로 보완 하였다. 

또한, 전통 한옥 구조상 객실에 설치하기 어려운 욕조는 별도로 신축된 한옥 목욕장을 통해 해결하여, 여유롭고 특별한 목욕 경험을 제공하고자 하였다. 

지방 소도시의 인구 감소와 빈집은 국가적 위기로 인식되는 상황이며, 각 지방 소도시는 생존의 문제로 다가오고 있다. 이러한 상황에서, 관광 콘텐츠 확보는 도시 존속과 경제적 자립의 핵심 과제가 되고 있다. 오랫동안 방치되었던 명지각의 재생은 남원시 뿐만 아니라 당면한 문제의 많은 지방소도시 도시재생의 중요한 시작점이 될 것으로 기대한다. 

Namwon, a city steeped in the story of Chunhyangjeon, where Sung Chunhyang and Lee Mongryong's tale unfolds, faced a variety of urban challenges by 2020, much like other small regional cities in Korea. Young people gradually left the city, and the historic downtown area experienced decline, with its cultural and historical assets slowly disappearing.

Myeongjigak, situated at the heart of Namwon’s old downtown, operated under names like Myeongjigwan, Myeongjijang, and Myeongjihotel from the 1960s to the 1980s. After losing its function as a lodging facility, it was used as a Korean restaurant. This led to a collaboration between Namwon City and local stakeholders, forming the foundation of the Namwon Old Downtown Urban Regeneration Program. Through the 2022 competition for the Regional Specialized Eco-Friendly Accommodation Development Project, it was transformed into its current state as a traditional Korean-style hotel, Myeongjigak.

The main building of Myeongjigak focuses on preserving and restoring its unique spatial characteristics, including carved pillars, a central courtyard layout, deep eaves, and corridors. At the same time, the program and layout were restructured to meet modern functionality and scale.

The guest rooms were designed to allow access through Myeongjigak’s garden and corridors, offering a direct experience of the space's unique characteristics. To address privacy limitations inherent in the single-story structure, additional screens inspired by the original wooden lattice designs of Myeongjigak were created. The relatively compact guest room sizes were complemented by maintaining only private functions within the rooms and enhancing shared spaces with an F&B facility in the sarangchae and a lounge in the ansarangchae.

Moreover, the challenge of installing bathtubs in traditional hanok structures was addressed with a newly constructed hanok bathhouse, providing guests with a leisurely and exceptional bathing experience.

Population decline and vacant houses in small regional cities are recognized as a national crisis, presenting existential challenges for these areas. In this context, securing tourism content has become a key task for urban survival and economic independence. The regeneration of Myeongjigak, long left neglected, is expected to serve as a crucial starting point not only for Namwon City but also for other regional cities grappling with similar urban regeneration challenges.
