보롬왓 하우스

보롬왓은 제주의 자연에서 재배되는 농산물과 원예작물로부터 추출된 원료로 만든 보롬왓 어메니티의 이야기를 담아낼 작은 쇼룸을 의뢰했다. 보롬왓을 함께 걸으며 선택한 곳은, 클라이언트가 10년 넘게 일구어 온 보롬왓의 자연이 내려다보이는 나지막한 언덕 위의 작은 숙대낭(삼나무 제주 방언) 숲이었다. 건물은 8평 남짓한 규모였지만, 우리는 이 공간이 단지 실내에서 완결되는 공간이 아닌 숙대낭 숲과 함께 확장되는 구조가 되길 바랐다.

우리는 건축의 출발을 건물의 실내가 아니라 돌담의 디자인에서 찾았다. 제주의 중산간 들판은 오래전부터 목장과 밭으로 사용되어 오며 각 특성에 맞는 돌담들이 존재했다. ‘잣담(또는 잣성)’은 중산간 목장에서 말을 막기 위해 쌓은 넓고 투박한 담으로, 폭이 넓고 돌의 형태가 불규칙한 특성을 갖는다. 또 다른 특징을 가진 ‘머들’은 제주의 밭에서 종종 볼 수 있는 중앙에 쌓인 돌무더기를 이르는 말로 밭을 개간하며 나온 돌을 모은 흔적이다.

잣담과 머들의 특징을 해석하여 만든 돌담은 현장에서 세밀하게 조정된 폭과 기울기, 형태를 통해 방문자가 숙대낭 숲으로 들어서며 중산간의 돌문화와 이 장소의 특별함을 자연스럽게 체험하도록 의도했다. 건축물은 이러한 돌담 위에 지붕이 얹히는 구조로 계획되었다. 지붕의 높이는 숙대낭에서 뻗어 나온 가지 아래로 낮추었고, 돌담의 완만한 곡선과 지형의 흐름이 자연스럼게 연결되어 경험할 수 있도록 했다. 고객은 숙대낭 숲으로 들어서며 점점 낮아지는 시선과 함께 돌담의 형태 변화를 느끼고, 그 끝에서 건물의 내부와 농장의 풍경을 마주하게 된다.

외부 들판 너머에서 보면, 이 작은 건물과 돌담은 오히려 숙대낭을 돋보이게 하는 배경이 된다. 세월이 흘러 이 구조물은 점차 자연 속으로 스며들어, 밭의 머들처럼 조용히 자리를 지키는 존재가 될 것이다.

Boromwat commissioned us to create a small showroom that would tell the story of Boromwat Amenities, made from ingredients extracted from agricultural and horticultural crops grown in Jeju’s natural environment. After walking through Boromwat together, we chose a gentle hillside overlooking the landscape the client has cultivated for more than ten years—a small grove of “sukdaenang” (Jeju dialect for cedar trees). Although the building was only about eight pyeong in size, we hoped it would not be a space that ended indoors, but a structure that expanded together with the sukdaenang forest.

We began the architecture not from the interior of the building, but from the design of the stone wall. Jeju’s mid-mountain fields have long been used as ranches and farmlands, each with stone walls suited to their purpose. The “jatdam” (or “jatseong”) is a broad, rough wall built in mid-mountain ranches to keep horses in; it is wide in section with irregularly shaped stones. Another form, the “meodeul,” refers to a pile of stones stacked at the center of a field—traces of stones collected while clearing farmland.

Interpreting the characteristics of the jatdam and meodeul, we designed a stone wall whose width, slope, and form were finely adjusted on site, allowing visitors to move into the sukdaenang grove while naturally experiencing Jeju’s mid-mountain stone culture and the uniqueness of this place. The building was planned as a structure where the roof gently rests upon this stone wall. Its height was lowered to slip beneath the branches extending from the sukdaenang grove, and the soft curves of the stone wall follow the flow of the terrain to create a seamless experience. As visitors enter the sukdaenang forest, their line of sight gradually lowers, letting them feel the shifting form of the stone wall until, at its end, they encounter the interior of the building and the scenery of the farm.

Seen from the outer fields, this small structure and its stone wall become a backdrop that makes the sukdaenang grove stand out even more. With time, the building will slowly blend into the landscape, eventually settling into place like a quiet meodeul in the field.
